The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug is a 2013 epic high-fantasy adventure film directed by Peter Jackson and produced by WingNut Films in collaboration with New Line Cinema and Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer. Tolkien describes Smaug as a reddish-gold dragon with big bat-like wings and sharp teeth and claws. On his belly (which everybody knows is usually a dragon's weak spot), he's got a crusty coating Smaug (also known as Smaug the Dragon) is the main antagonist of the 1937 classic fantasy novel The Hobbit by the late J.R.R. Tolkien, and its many adaptations. Smaug is a dragon whose evil, like Gollum's, is indicated by his isolation. He lives alone in the Lonely Mountain, his only purpose to guard the treasure he stole from the dwarves during the reign of Thorin's grandfather.
